Introduction To
Specialty Diving

What are the prerequisites to take a specialty course?

Any open water diver may take specialty courses such as Altitude Diving, Boat Diving, Drift Diving, Dry Suit Diving, Equipment Specialist, Multilevel Diving, Night Diving, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Research Diving, UW Hunting and Collecting, UW Naturalist, UW Navigator, UW Photography.

Advanced level specialty courses include Cavern Diving, Deep Diving, Ice Diving, Kayak Diving, Search and Recovery Diving and Wreck Diving.

If you are a certified diver use your specialty certifications to increase your opportunities for fun underwater and seek out the courses that interest you.

Why take a specialty course?

Some divers believe they can save time and money, by learning a diving specialty on their own. This has proven to be unwise for several very good reasons.

While you can learn through trial and error, the errors you make while diving could be very hazardous.  At the very least, learning a specialty activity safely, is an excellent reason for taking a specialty course from our qualified staff.

Do you really save time and money by learning through experience?

It takes far longer to learn through trail and error, and learning from mistakes is often expensive, since time is money.

You can benefit from the years of accumulated experience of a specialty course instructor and avoid nearly all of the mistakes commonly made.  You’ll learn how to do something right the first time!  Since time underwater is limited, you’ll want to make the best possible use of that time.

What’s it like to take a specialty course?

Specialty courses range from beginning level training to highly advanced training.  They range in duration from 4 hours to 24 hours of class time and 1 to 4 dives devoted to open water training.

A specialty course is not intended to make you an expert in a specialty area of diving.  It will however, introduce you to the specialty, make you aware of the potential hazards, how to avoid them, allow you to safely experience the specialty, and let you know resources for learning more about the special interest area.
