Diveditorial: Spring Is Right Around The Corner!

WOW! Can you believe that it is February already? This has been a challenging year, with high surf and bad conditions. Those of you, who have been out diving, have seen dolphins, whales and lots of Orcas this year. When conditions have been good, there has been 40 to 60 feet of visibility and flat water. On New Year’s Eve, we had over 30+ feet of visibility and you could have water skied on the ocean. The best way to determine if it is a good day to go diving is to check out all of tools we have placed on our “Diving Conditions” web page.

With Spring around the corner, we have several activities planned to get you back into the water and out diving. How about diving from a boat, attending a seminar, or enhancing your scuba knowledge by taking a course? Either way, we are sure there is something to interest you. Check out our Spring newsletter and let us know when you are going to joining us!

E-Mail Newsletters: Do We Have Your Current Email Address?

Using an e-mail newsletter is the best way we can keep you in the loop as to what is happening with Dive N Trips. We need to make sure we have your most current email address. Please give us a call or email us so we can help get you out diving and having fun or let you know about our next event at the store!

We Are A PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center!

We did it! YEAH! We have achieved our goal of becoming a PADI Instructor Development Center in two years. This PADI rating, allows us to offer all levels of the PADI Continuing Education programs, from Open Water Diver all the way through and beyond the Instructor course. We are excited about the possibilities this offers to you and the Bay Area. Look for more information later in this newsletter about our “Go Pro” night to learn more about becoming a dive professional.

The first hour we discuss what is happening to our oceans and what they can do to assist the environment. The second hour we are in the water scuba diving! Our camps are for youths that are from 8 to 12 years old, must be able to swim and comfortable in the water. We include a PADI Seal Team student kit, as well as a youth mask, snorkel and fins. If this sounds like fun, it is! To learn more about our camps please check our “Kids Zone” web page at http://www.diventrips.com/pb/wp_077f2222/wp_077f2222.html

Please RSVP and let us know if you are planning on attending.

“Go Pro” Seminar                                                       Mar. 18th, 7pm

Thinking about changing careers? Does the sound of working on a nice tropical island in the idle of the South Pacific or Caribbean sound like fun? If so, then come join us for an evening on how to make diving your vocation. Not only will we be covering how to get to your instructor rating, but what to do with it, once you have it.

“Wine and Cheese Social”                                            Apr. 9th, 7pm

Dive Equipment Information:

“BCD 101”

Sizing: BCDs come in two types of configurations, a single and dual bladder style BCD. 90% of the BCD’s on the market are of single bag variety. They are made from 420 denier nylon, which is both ideal for travel and highly puncture resistant. Where high denier nylon 840, 1000, 1200 are heavier but, highly scratch resistant against sharp objects such as wrecks. They are ideal for the technical diver. Dual bag style BCD have the benefits of higher denier nylon with a urethane inner bladder. They need more maintenance but are sort of a hybrid between recreational and technical style BCD’s. 90% of all BCDs have a wrap around bladder that puts air underneath your arm which is principally designed for comfort. Wing style BCDs are directed to the more technical experienced diver and can provide higher lift for twin tanks. Next Issue: Integrated Weights!

“Regulators 101”

Regulators consist of a first and second stage. They are designed to take the high pressure of your cylinder and reduces it down to a divers demand level. Advances in regulator technology and materials allow for easier breathing and less jaw fatigue. Since there is no way you can breathe directly off your scuba tank, you’ll need a regulator to take your tank’s high pressure and deliver air based on your demand. Generally the first stage of the regulator that attaches to the tank takes the high pressure and breaks it down to an intermediate pressure of approximately 125 to 140psi over ambient pressure. So at 33 feet it is actually giving 145 to 165psi and at 66 feet is reading 15psi higher, etc. Then the air comes out of the low pressure ports on the first stage and fills the hose line up which is connected to the second stage, where the diver’s mouth piece is located. Air then is provided on a diver demand basis. You inhale the air from the hose that now fills the open space in the mouthpiece as you breathe. Next Issue: The Primary Components!
